Street Trees in Japan IX, Summary Edition

Street Trees in Japan IX

Every five years since 1982, the Greening Ecology Laboratory has conducted a survey on the current status of road greening trees through questionnaires to road greening tree managers nationwide.

The following is a summary of the results as of March 31, 2022.

1.Objective

The purpose of this survey was to investigate the current status of road greening trees (by tall trees and medium-sized shrubs) in Japan, and to compile data by nation, region, prefecture, and road type to provide basic data for the promotion of road greening projects in the future.

2.Methods

Questionnaires on roadside trees were distributed to prefectures, government ordinance-designated cities, local development bureaus of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Hokkaido Development Bureau, Okinawa General Bureau, and highway companies in September 2022, and were collected between October and November 2022. The survey items were the number of roadside trees managed by each road administrator by species.

(1)Roads and trees to be surveyed

The survey covered roads managed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, prefectures, municipalities, local road corporations, and expressway companies (East Nippon Expressway Company Limited, Central Nippon Expressway Company Limited, West Nippon Expressway Company Limited, Metropolitan Expressway Company Limited, Hanshin Expressway Company Limited, Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Company Limited), which were in service as of March 31, 2022. The following roads are defined as roads in service as of March 31, 2022, managed by the following companies: Expressway Company, Limited.

(2)Geographic area classification

The regional divisions used in the tabulation of this survey are as follows.

Hokkaido Hokkaido
Tohoku Aomori、Iwate、Miyagi、Akita、Yamagata、Fukushima
Kanto Ibaragi、Tochigi、Gunma、Saitama、Chiba、Tokyo、Kanagawa
Hokuriku Nigata、Toyama、Ishikawa
Chubu Fukui、Yamanashi、Nagano、Gifu、Shizuoka、Aichi、Mie
Kinki Shiga、Kyoto、Osaka、Hyogo、Nara、Wakayama
Chugoku Tottori、Shimane、Okayama、Hiroshima、Yamaguchi
Shikoku Kanagawa、Kochi、Ehime、Tokushima
Kyusyu Fukuoka、Saga、Nagasaki、Kumamoto、Oita、Miyazaki、Kagoshima
Okinawa Okinawa

3.Result

The survey results were compiled by dividing them into two categories: roads managed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, prefectures, municipalities, and local road corporations, and roads managed by expressway companies (East Nippon Expressway Company Limited, Central Nippon Expressway Company Limited, West Nippon Expressway Company Limited, Metropolitan Expressway Company Limited, Hanshin Expressway Company Limited, Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Company Limited). The classification was made into the following two categories.

3.1 Roads managed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism/prefectural and municipal governments/local road corporations

(1)Number

1)Number of bottles by prefecture

2)Number of roads by type

The number of roads by type was calculated by prefecture, dividing the types of roads managed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, prefectures, municipalities, and local road public corporations into general national roads (directly managed), general national roads (subsidized), prefectural roads, and municipal roads.
