1.Objective
The purpose of this survey was to investigate the current status of road greening trees (by tall trees and medium-sized shrubs) in Japan, and to compile data by nation, region, prefecture, and road type to provide basic data for the promotion of road greening projects in the future.
2.Methods
Questionnaires on roadside trees were distributed to prefectures, government ordinance-designated cities, local development bureaus of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Hokkaido Development Bureau, Okinawa General Bureau, and highway companies in September 2022, and were collected between October and November 2022. The survey items were the number of roadside trees managed by each road administrator by species.
(1)Roads and trees to be surveyed
The survey covered roads managed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, prefectures, municipalities, local road corporations, and expressway companies (East Nippon Expressway Company Limited, Central Nippon Expressway Company Limited, West Nippon Expressway Company Limited, Metropolitan Expressway Company Limited, Hanshin Expressway Company Limited, Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Company Limited), which were in service as of March 31, 2022. The following roads are defined as roads in service as of March 31, 2022, managed by the following companies: Expressway Company, Limited.
