ITS : Intelligent
Transport Systems
' Intelligent Transport Systems' is a generic name of newly road traffic system to improve traffic safety, transportation efficiency, and pleasantly. ITS is constructed as one integrated system from human, road and vehicle by use of leading-edge information and telecommunication technologies.
Message 'Message' indicates a unit of data conveyed in one phase of communication between centers, between a center and roadside equipment, or between roadside equipment and vehicles.
MS: Message Set 'Message Set' defines gathered messages used in each phase of communications between application systems. And MS will consist of the elements outlined below.
PT: Protocol A Protocol establishes a series of communication procedures used to accurately send and receive data between devices connected by communication circuits.
A Protocol consists of the following elements.
Protocol sets
Rules for determining encoding method
Protocol Set Based on a basic OSI reference model, a Protocol Set is a unit consisting of several layers of protocol specifications to form protocol rules applied to communication systems used by highway administrators. Protocol Sets are defined both at the upper layer (from the network layer to the application layer) and at the lower layer (physical layer and data link layer) respectively.
Roadside Equipment Together with a Center, Roadside Equipment forms a component. Placed at the side of a road. Roadside Equipment is used for data collection, data provision and communication between vehicles on the road.
Smartway The road which integrates various ITS technologies such as VICS, ETC, and AHS, have excellent effect on the improvement of traffic safety and traffic flow.
Ministry of land, Infrastructure and transport have scheduled to promote research and development about it, and to maintain of the standards for achieve Smartway on the main roads in the whole country after 2002.
System A system is a set or organization of procedures, hardware, software, equipment and people used to meet a defined need or purpose.
System Architecture 'System Architecture' indicates the overall structure (framework) of an entire system, and expresses the relationship between the elements (including the technology and smaller individual systems) that form a system.
OSI basic reference model OSI basic reference model consists of seven layers, each of which specifies particular network functions. The model developed by ISO based on the Open System Interconnection.
ITS Platform ITS platform is the system base for which individual application of ITS can be used together. And also it is the infrastructure to use of telecommunication technology.
WTO(World Trade Organization) The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations.
VICS(Vehicle Information and Communication System) Vehicle Information and Communication System provides latest road traffic information such as congestion, restriction, guides on road, and parking lots via on-board equipment such as car navigation systems. Information is transmitted in the direction of traffic flow to the drivers to suit their needs, from beacons installed on the roadside via on-board car navigation equipment. FM multiplex broadcasting delivers information that covers a wider region.
Object Oriented Object oriented is the idea that data processing and system operation are caught as relation of objects not flow of procedure
Upper Class Class is a category of objects in object-oriented. The one located in the high rank for this class is called an upper class. For example, "location information class" is the upper class of "point location information class".
Intranet A network based on TCP/IP protocols belonging to an organization, usually a corporation, accessible only by the organization's members, employees, or others with authorization.
IP Communication protocol of network layer used by the Internet etc.
multipoint line In communications, a single line that interconnects three or more devices. It is classified three types as follows;
1) Point to multipoint: one information source sends information to plural parties.
2) Multipoint to point:plural information sources send information to one party.
3) Multipoint to multipoint: plural information sources send information to plural parties.
Function Model The function model is merging of specific physical models of the subservices which are necessary for ITS services.
The subservice is a minimum unit of the service defined by the system architecture of ITS.
The specific physical model represents transmission of information between the subsystems, as necessitated by each subservice.
System Model The system model represent allocation of equipments and functions by each function model.
CORBA(Common Object Request Broker Architecture) One of technological specifications which enable communication of object (program parts) exceeding wall of platform and program language. OMG(Object Management Group) is regulated.
Physical Layer The physical layer is responsible for passing bits onto and receiving them from the connecting medium. This layer has no understanding of the meaning of the bits, but deals with the electrical and mechanical characteristics of the signals and signaling methods.
Data Link Layer The data link is responsible for node to node validity and integrity of the transmission. The transmitted bits are divided into frames.
Network Layer The network layer establishes the route between the sending and receiving stations. The node to node function of the data link layer (layer 2) is extended across the entire internetwork, because a routable protocol contains a network address in addition to a station addresses.
Transport Layer The transport layer is responsible for overall end to end validity and integrity of the transmission. The lower data link layer (layer 2) is only responsible for delivering packets from one node to another. Thus, if a packet gets lost in a router somewhere in the enterprise internet, the transport layer will detect that.
Session Layer Provides coordination of the communications in an orderly manner. It determines one-way or two-way communications and manages the dialogue between both parties
Presentation Layer When data is transmitted between different types of computer systems, the presentation layer negotiates and manages the way data is represented and encoded.
Application Layer This top layer defines the language and syntax that programs use to communicate with other programs. The application layer represents the purpose of communicating in the first place.
SNMP(Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data is passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device to the workstation console used to oversee the network. The agents return information contained in a MIB, which is a data structure that defines what is obtainable from the device and what can be controlled.
DATEX-ASN(Data Exchange- ASN.1) DATEX-ASN is the application layer protocol for TICS(Transport Information and Control Systems) . It is not the one limited to TICS but it is the general purpose protocol.
MIB(Management Information Base) A database of objects that can be monitored by a network management system.
AHS(Advanced Cruise Assit Highway System) Advanced Cruise Assist Highway System provide real time information concerning other vehicles and pedestrians around a driver. It aims to reduce trouble of driver and secure safety.
EDI(Electronic Data Interchange) The electronic communication of business transactions, such as orders, confirmations and invoices, between organizations.
ETC(Elecronic Toll Collection) Electronic Toll Collection System is the system that automatically pays charge by using wireless system communication without stopping at toll gate. It aims alleviation of traffic congestion near toll gate, enhancement of convenience of drivers by eliminating the need to handle cash and reduction of management cost.
ISO(Internatinal Organizatin for Standardization) Organization to settle on international standard of industrial product. It has been established in 1947, and about 90 countries are participating now.
ISO/TC204(Internatinal Organizatin for Standardization/
Technical Commitee 204)
