Introduction

Sewage systems have greatly helped to improved sanitation and aquatic environments. However, new needs have arisen in recent years due to public anxiety on the effect of emerging pathogens and chemical substances to human health and aquatic ecosystems. Furthermore, the utilization of wastewater and sewage sludge have become increasingly important in order to prevent global warming and to achieve sustainable society.

Therefore, the Wastewater and Sludge Management Division investigates the following themes.

  • Cost and energy saving methods on wastewater and sewage sludge treatment processes
  • Wastewater treatment, especially the occurrence of pathogens in wastewater
  • The causes of endocrine disruptors, and associated countermeasures
  • Technical standards for treated wastewater recycling systems
  • The effects of wastewater effluent on aquatic ecosystems
