Role of this document

In 2020, Autonomous Driving Support Facilities (ADSF) were defined in the Road Act in Japan.

This document was made to harmonize ADSF with international standards for autonomous driving technology.

This document is positioned as a sharable feature defined in GDF5.1.

This document was presented at the international conference of ISO TC204 WG3 held in May 2023.

Scope of specification

Data specification for ADSF in Japan

  - Not to define application-oriented spec. the scope of ADSF Data specifiction
- Consistent with ISO19131:2022.

What is Autonomous Driving Support Facilities ?

In 2020, the Road Act was partially amended, and “Autonomous Driving Support Facilities” were defined as one of the road facilities.

Facilities that support the operation of autonomous driving vehicles, such as magnetic markers, etc., are defined as autonomous driving support facilities, one of the roadside facilities.(The property owned by private sectors should be considered occupied property.)

Details specified by ministerial ordinance

Performance required for ADSF Electromagnetic induction wires Magnetic markers Facility for displaying location information Support for sensing in areas not reachable by vehicle sensors
Operation support by locating the vehicle's position using electromagnetic induction wires. Operation support by locating the vehicle's position using magnetic markers. Support for localization of ego-vehicle using information provided by the sign displaying location information. Support for understanding road conditions in areas where sensing from vehicles is not possible.
Performance criteria Items that emit magnetic fields, etc. necessary to support autonomous driving vehicles, etc. Items that display information indicating the location of the road on which the ADSF is installed. Items indicating road structure, other vehicles, pedestrians, or obstructions.
Other necessary matters It is specified that the following information should be publicly notified about the installed facilities.
  • Location of the facility
  • Description of installed facilities (e.g., magnetic markers)
  • Performance of the installed facility (e.g., magnetic field strength)
  • Other necessary information

Use cases of ADFS information on vehicle

Delivering information on the section or lane where ADSF are installed. Localization of ego-vehicle using information provided by the sign. Delivering blind section info. via the facility.
