Aim of the Division |
The Fire Standards Division performs research on fire properties of building materials, fire resistance of structural elements, smoke movement and control, and evacuation in order to investigate various phenomena associated with fires. Introduction of performance-based fire safety standards and developments of methods to evaluate fire safety performance of structures, evacuation, and other requirements are within the scope of the division mission. |
Research challenges |
Introduction of performance based fire safety standards |
The revision to the Building Standard Law of 1998 introduced performance based standards replacing the past prescriptive standards for fire safety. It is also developing simplified engineering methods of verifying conformity with performance based standards and is working to develop new performance based standards. |
Conformity with international standards |
Building regulations enacted in various countries are non-tariff barriers that obstruct the international trade in building materials. The division is cooperating actively with efforts to establish common evaluation methods for building material that are studied under the guidance of the ISO and carrying out research to bring Japan's fire testing methods into conformity with international standards. |
