Experiment on Desirable Structures for Two-step Crossing System that Supports Safe Crossing of Pedestrians
概要
The number of transportation fatalities has been declining in Japan in recent years. However, when we look carefully at the breakdown of transportation fatalities, 33% were vehicle passengers and 36% were pedestrians. Among fatal pedestrian accidents, 72% of pedestrians were crossing the street. Moreover, the case fatality rate of pedestrian accidents is approx. 5%. This is 7 times as high as the case fatality rates of other accident categories. The case fatality rate of pedestrians even rises to approx. 12% particularly when second parties are the elderly. Such data shows that accidents of pedestrians who are crossing the street are very common and have a higher possibility of resulting in serious injuries including fatalities. This tendency is particularly notable in the case of the elderly. In order to solve this problem, a method of improving the safety of pedestrians (two-step crossing system), which allows pedestrians to cross the street in two stages by establishing a traffic island in the center of the road, is used mainly in Western countries.
