Research Conducted by the Advanced Road Design and Safety Division

A road is one of the most important infrastructures indispensable for our daily lives and our social and economic activities. Japan, where it is predicted that one person in four will be 65 or older by 2015, will soon become a full-fledged aged society with a low birth rate. Providing living environments where people can live safely and free from worry is becoming an increasingly important issue for a mature society with a low birth rate and aging population that emphasizes its members' welfare. Therefore, every road that is an important part of this living space, and that people use every day, must be a safe and comfortable space that we can all use without fear.
The Advanced Road Design and Safety Division is conducting the following research activities in order to provide roads that are safe and comfortable and that people can use without fear.

T.ITS for pedestrians
U.Barrier free (Accessibility)
V.Community zones
W.Road space reallocation
X.Road safety measures
