Summary The efficient and effective operation of existing dams is highly required since the frequency of the phenomenon of extreme rainfall events have increased due to climate change. In contrast, the construction of additional flood control facilities has been lagging behind schedule due to various constraints. This paper studied the applicability of a rational flood control method aiming at minimizing downstream damages including extreme floods, while utilizing rainfall prediction by the weather research and forecasting model (WRF), the accuracy of which has been significantly improved recently. This paper also discusses the suitable handling of errors in rainfall prediction by the WRF and the other possible improvements to achieve more effective dam operation.
