Summary In this study, theoretical investigation is carried out at first to grasp the general properties of uplifting behavior of buildings. After that, numerical simulations and shaking table tests are carried out to clarify uplift responses of buildings with plan asymmetry. From the results, the main conclusions are summarized as follows: (1) Complicated uplift responses at a glance can be recognized as natural consequences of higher modes' properties and their behaviors. (2) Uplift responses automatically make the maximum shear force on each frame to be almost equal
