Summary This study deals with the environmental impact assessment of shore protection facilities on the coastal ecosystem. An integrated environmental impact evaluation model is constituted by combining the dynamic models for predicting changes in the physical environment, such as waves and currents, with the SI (Suitability Index) models for describing the relationship between a specific species and its dominant impact factors. The model is used to evaluate the habitat environment for the selected representative species at Toban coast to investigate the environmental impact of the construction of coastal protection facilities. Meanwhile, consideration on the quantitative environmental impact assessment, such as the determination of dominant impact factors as well as evaluation time period and space domain, is also discussed.
